Grand Slam Smile posted Sunday’s highest Horse Racing Nation speed figure with a 142 at Del Mar in the Betty Grable Stakes, a seven-furlong dirt sprint for fillies and mares bred or sired in California. The 4-year-old Smiling Tiger filly, sent off the 7-10 favorite for trainer Sean McCarthy, attended the pace and got up in the final furlong to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths.
The consistent Grade 3-placed filly won for the third time in five starts this year and extended her lifetime record to 16: 9-6-1 with $753,120 in earnings. Her dam, the Grand Slam mare Royal Grand Slam, has been a strong producer in California. She is a half-sister to the stakes winners Luck’s Royal Flush and Royal ‘n Rando as well as to the stakes-placed Grand Yodeler and Late ‘n Left.

It was his first win in eight starts this year, and the third in 21 lifetime outings. He is out of the Grade 1-placed Street Sense mare Miss Netta, The 5-year-old gelding by Carpe Diem won at 3-1 odds in a dominant performance by 3 1/2 lengths, securing his third career win from 21 starts. His dam Miss Netta is Grade 1-placed and earned $92,000.

Moonlight Dash posted the day’s highest figure among maiden winners with a 125 HRN speed figure in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight dirt sprint at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old daughter of Maclean’s Music, who pulled up in her only previous start in May, rebounded beautifully Sunday at 5-1 odds. The Phil Bauer trainee set a pressured pace but had plenty left to rocket clear in the lane and win by 6 1/4 lengths. Her dam is the winning and stakes-placed Malibu Moon mare Moon Dash. Her most accomplished sibling to date is the Uncle Mo colt Donegal Momentum, who won the Poker Stakes (G3) and Bernard Baruch Stakes this year at Saratoga.
Hypergamy earned a 114 HRN figure at Del Mar on Sunday, breaking her maiden in her fourth career start. The 2-year-old filly by American Pharoah quickly cleared to the lead and kept going, winning by two lengths at 5-2 odds. Trained by Doug O’Neill, Hypergamy already stakes-placed was by virtue of a third behind Dreaming of Alys in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies in September. She is out of the multiple Grade 3 winner Shane’s Girlfriend, an Adios Charlie daughter who also was trained by O’Neill. She is one of two winners from three starters out of her dam. Warm Sun and Brew also earned a 110 HRN figure for his victory Sunday in a maiden special weight in a California-bred or -sired turf mile Sunday at Del Mar. The 3-year-old Clubhouse Ride gelding, trained by Mark Glatt, handled company on the lead early but opened up to win by 2 1/2 lengths as the 3-2 favorite. It was his second start, after a runner-up effort on debut at Santa Anita on Oct. 5. Warm Sun and Brew is the only starter out of the multiple stakes-placed Bedford Falls mare Wonderful Lie, a six-time winner and earner of $395,109.

About HRN speed figures
HRN speed figures are AI-generated using HRN‘s proprietary machine-learning algorithms. Although they involve less human input than other speed figures, we see that as a plus as human adjustments often knock down surprisingly good performances to match expectations. HRN speed figures were launched in December 2024, and our expectation is also that the AI-generated speed figures will continuously get better over time.
The HRN speed figure scale goes from 1 to 160. Part of the reason for this higher scale is this helps us avoid assigning a speed figure of zero. For some products, in weaker races, half the field or more may get a speed figure of zero, which leads to inaccuracy and defeats the purpose of speed figures.
Because the HRN speed figures are based on machine learning, as we improve our models we can compute the numbers historically.
