Racing will return to Kansas next year after the state’s legislature and governor agreed to allow after 1,000 historical horse-racing machines.
Thoroughbred Daily News reported that 3% of the gross revenue from the machines will go to racing. About $15 million is expected to go to the state’s development fund, which allocates purse money, according to the report, with Kansas’s breeding fund getting about $3 million.
Plans call for 44 days of racing next year at Eureka Downs, which has not held racing since 2008. The track is undergoing renovations and could request more dates in the future, Peach Madl, executive director of the Kansas Thoroughbred Association, told TDN.
The machines will be at a gaming facility in Park City, Kansas.
Madl said that with the states proximity to Remington Park, Prairie Meadows and Nebraska tracks, she does not expect difficulty in filling fields.
“We plan not to interfere with their races,” she told TDN. “There will be a pocket for us.”
