CHICAGO – Thursday night’s series finale between the American League Central-leading White Sox and the National League East-leading Braves has been postponed due to rain.
The contest originally was scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m. CT but was delayed 40 minutes before the set first pitch. The forecast called for rain throughout the evening, marking a second straight day of treacherous weather in the Chicago area, with the Braves flying to New York for a weekend series against the Mets.
This game will be made up on Thursday, Aug. 20, starting at 1:10 p.m. CT./2:10 p.m. ET. It’s a shared off-day between both teams, with the Braves making a stop in between a road trip to the Twins and then the Brewers, while the White Sox will be coming off a three-game crosstown battle with the Cubs at Wrigley Field and then hosting the Mets and Rangers after the makeup contest.
With Thursday’s postponement, the Braves will simply push their rotation back one day for this weekend’s series against the Mets. Left-hander Martin Pérez is now expected to start Friday’s opener at Citi Field, followed by Spencer Strider on Saturday and Bryce Elder on Sunday.
The White Sox changed their probable starters for the weekend Dodgers series to Anthony Kay on Friday, Sean Burke on Saturday afternoon and Erick Fedde to close the homestand. Kay was originally scheduled to start Thursday’s finale.
“TBA” had been listed on Saturday for the White Sox, giving thought to left-hander Hagen Smith, the No. 4 White Sox prospect and No. 47 overall, making his big league debut. That spot now won’t be really needed again until next weekend in Detroit.
All tickets for Thursday’s postponed contest, including prepaid parking passes and Stadium Club passes, are now good for admission to the rescheduled game on Aug. 20 at Rate Field. No exchanges are necessary.
One highlight of the 90 minute rain delay was the engaging White Sox hurler Mike Vasil, who is out of action for the season following Tommy John surgery, bringing out his magic wand to the home dugout while wearing his wizard’s hat. Vasil, joined by teammates including Chase Meidroth and Kyle Teel, waved the wand, previously used to help guide this team to vast success, toward the stands but it didn’t make the rain stop.
