Paul Goldschmidt’s third-inning home run held up in New York’s 1-0 victory on Friday night as Cam Schlittler combined with three relievers on a five-hit shutout. Schlittler battled control issues with five walks but struck out eight in 5.2 innings, allowing two hits. The defense came up big in the seventh when Cody Bellinger threw out Ceddanne Rafaela at the plate to end the seventh inning to preserve the shutout. David Bednar worked a perfect ninth for his 31st save.
The Red Sox left 10 men on base, going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and Rafaela took away a potential scoring chance in the fifth when he was doubled off first base as the trail runner on a lineout to center field. Patrick Sandoval took the hard-luck loss after allowing a run on three hits over 5.1 innings while striking out seven. Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu finished with two hits each, with Abreu doubling twice.
Left-hander Carlos Rodón (4-2) starts for the third time since returning from the injured list and enters with a 3.15 ERA and 1.215 WHIP in 11 starts and 54.1 innings, striking out 58. Boston gives the ball to lefty Jake Bennett (8-6), who comes in with a 3.49 ERA and 1.072 WHIP in 87.2 innings over 15 starts.
