Talk about changing an entire operation. Washington didn’t just add one established star.
It added Trae Young and Anthony Davis to a roster that also landed No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. That creates one of the strangest fantasy situations of the offseason because there’s suddenly real talent everywhere.
Young remains one of basketball’s premier creators. Davis, when healthy, can produce elite fantasy numbers without having an offense completely revolve around him. Dybantsa is the franchise’s future and should receive plenty of opportunity.
That’s also where the complications begin. Namely, there’s only one basketball.
Young will dominate possessions. Davis needs touches. Dybantsa needs development. Everyone else now slides further down the offensive hierarchy.
That’s why I’m not sure adding more stars automatically creates more fantasy value. It may actually concentrate it.
I’d feel good drafting the headliners. I’d be much more cautious with everybody around them.
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo Goes to Miami
This is the one, and the reason isn’t simply that Giannis Antetokounmpo changed teams. It’s everything that happened around him because he did.
Miami suddenly built its offense and frontcourt around Giannis and Bam Adebayo. That changes shot distribution, rebounding opportunities, spacing and the roles of nearly every Heat player sharing the floor with them.
Then look at Milwaukee. Giannis didn’t leave behind a small role. He left behind the role.
For years, everything the Bucks did started with Antetokounmpo. His departure creates opportunities for Tyler Herro and essentially every other fantasy-relevant player remaining on that roster.
Some will benefit considerably. Others will discover that having a larger role isn’t necessarily the same thing as being better at it. That’s what makes this trade so fascinating. It didn’t simply move one superstar’s fantasy value. It forced us to reevaluate two teams.
For Giannis himself, I wouldn’t expect some massive statistical increase. Playing alongside Adebayo and on a deeper Miami roster could actually require him to do slightly less.
Herro is the opposite. The ball should find him constantly in Milwaukee, and his offensive responsibility could increase significantly.
Then there are all the secondary pieces whose rebounds, shots, assists and minutes will be redistributed differently because one of basketball’s most dominant players switched conferences.
That’s a lot of fantasy dominoes from one transaction.
What Actually Makes a Trade Matter in Fantasy?
This is the part I think fantasy managers sometimes miss.
The biggest name doesn’t automatically equal the biggest fantasy impact.
I’d rather ask three questions:
- How many players change roles?
- How large were those changes?
- And will those changes actually affect where I’m willing to draft them?
That’s why Giannis to Miami wins for me.
The Kawhi trade changes several players. LaMelo changes Minnesota’s backcourt. Washington suddenly has a fascinating collection of stars.
But Giannis leaving Milwaukee and landing in Miami fundamentally changed two rosters at once. That’s difficult to top.
And The Verdict Is . . .
So my ranking is: Giannis to Miami first. Trae Young and Anthony Davis to Washington second. LaMelo Ball to Minnesota third. Kawhi Leonard to Toronto fourth.
And here’s the important part: I’m not ranking the trades by which one I’d rather watch. I’m ranking them by which one forces me to erase the most names from my old fantasy draft board and start over.
That’s Milwaukee-Miami. Giannis may remain Giannis. But everyone around him just became something different.
For fantasy purposes, that’s where this trade really gets interesting.
